 LAPTOP
PROTECTION

Laptops are not indestructible.
In fact, they are very fragile and just the slightest nudge can cause
data loss. At Essential Data Recovery, we received one recently which
prompted the writing of this article.
Everything that had
to do with the client’s business had been stored on a shared laptop.
Sales, accounting, and other important information of the business was
lost after the laptop had been dropped. By the end, forty five gigabytes
worth of data had been recovered.
We’ve compiled
a list of suggestions that might aid in preventing data loss.
Tip
[1]
Most laptops have ventilation areas on the bottom with some on the side.
If interfered with, it’s possible for the electronics or the hard
drive to suffer damage from heat. Identify the ventilation areas on your
laptop and make sure that there is nothing interfering with them.
Tip
[2]
With your laptop plugged into the wall, there is the possibility of a
surge or brown out, which can cause severe damage. Whether at home or
while traveling it is suggested that you pack/use a quality surge protector
to help prevent against data loss.
Tip
[3]
A heavy-duty laptop case is also recommended while transporting. Stay
away from the giveaways that companies sometimes offer as perks. While
nice in appearance with a sharp looking logo, they don’t offer as
much protection. Always make sure that the laptop fits snuggly when packed
inside.
Tip
[4]
Most laptops
now come installed with an antivirus program. It should be updated frequently.
Vendors have been known to release numerous updates on a weekly basis.
Also, make sure to run a complete system scan once a week!
Tip
[5]
Backing up your data regularly is the best practice for preventing data
loss. There are a number of ways to back-up, including external hard drives,
CD’s, DVD’s and USB keys. Always ensure that you are backing
up the correct data, and verify that it works on another computer if one
is available.
Tip
[6]
Most applications come with an “auto save” feature.
Type this into the help section of the application you’re in to
find out how to set it.
Tip
[7]
If you hear any strange noises or clicking sounds from the laptop do not
attempt any kind of backup. Shut down and call Essential Data
Recovery immediately for a free consultation.
